    Leading Pacific poet, performer and children’s author Tusiata Avia has travelled the world performing her award winning one-woman poetry show based on her collection Wild Dogs Under My Skirt. Her collection The Savage Coloniser Book (VUP, ) won the Mary and Peter Biggs prize for poetry at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards, making Tusiata the first Pacific woman to win this prize in the Awards&#; year history. Tusiata’s other poetry collections are Bloodclot (VUP, ), and Fale Aitu Spirit House (VUP, ) which was shortlisted for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. Writer Nafanua Kersel describes Tusiata&#;s poetry as &#;a full-body plunge in winter seas. It’s breathtaking, skin tingling and teeth rattling. I feel alive.&#;

    Recently Tusiata was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to poetry and the arts in the Queens Birthday Honours. She has also held a number of residencies including the Fulbright Pacific Writer’s Fellowship at University of Hawai’i () and the Ursula Bethel Writer in Residence at University of Canterbury () and was the recipient of the Janet Frame Literary Trust Award. She taught creative writing and performing arts at the Manukau Institute of Technology.

    I remember listening to a Radio New Zealand review of Tusiata Avia’s third book, Fale Aitu/Spirit House. The reviewer, a well-known Pākehā male poet, said the word ‘dark’ over and over again. That adjective ‘dark’, and its mantra-like repetition, undermined what was otherwise a strong review of Avia’s poetry &#; her array of technical skill, assuredness of voice, the way she tackled issues with vivid, tensely packed language, and so on.  But it was ‘dark’. Fale Aitu hadn’t struck me &#; a fellow Pacific Island woman poet &#; as especially ‘dark’, irrevocably ‘dark’, indulgently, provocatively, ridiculously ‘dark’. It is life. Our lives. As experienced from within the body of a brown woman growing up in a ‘post’ colonial Aotearoa New Zealand.
