The history of modern Indonesian paintings is still very recent. In , only a few years before the Japanese invasion, the painters Sudjojono, Agus Djaja and Otto Djaja, founded an association of art teachers, the Persagi. They are considered the pioneers of modern Indonesian painting, and soon others joined the Persagi. As a cosmopolitan, the court painter Raden Saleh ( ) was not unknown among European royalty. He and the portrait painter Basuki Abdullah (), of the ‘Mooi-Indie’(the Beautiful Indies) preceded the Persagi as singular personalities who are held in high esteem in the world of Indonesian fine arts. In this collection there is a portrait of Raden Saleh by Srihadi Soedarsono, and the other painters mentioned here also represented.
