In the midst of some fruitful discussion generated by the recent posts on Rowan Williams by Chris Green and Joel Daniels, a friend of mine (who also happens to be an outstanding MacKinnon scholar) shared these words with me. I’ve been meditating on them all week, and thought that they were worth sharing here not only for what they tell us about MacKinnon’s mind (and perhaps too about Williams’), but also for what they tell us about ourselves and about our being overcome, and – here playing the risk of presumptuousness – of the depths that such overcoming involves:

Scottish philosopher and theologian (1913–1994)
Donald Mackenzie MacKinnonFRSE FBA (1913–1994) was a Scottish philosopher and theologian.
Life
[edit]He was born in Oban on 27 August 1913, the son of Donald M. MacKinnon, Procurator Fiscal, and his wife, Grace Isabella Rhynd.
He was educated at Cargilfield Preparatory School in Edinburgh then Winchester College in Hampshire. He then studied divinity at New College, Oxford, graduating MA in 1935. From 1940 he began tutoring at the University of Oxford becoming a lecturer in philosophy in 1945. In 1947 he became Regius Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Aberdeen, and in 1960 became the Norris–Hulse Professor of Divinity in the University of Cambridge. He retired from full-time academia in 1978.[6] MacKinnon delivered the Gifford Lectures in 1965 and 1966 on 'The Problem of Metaphysics'. A revised version of the lectures was published under the same name in 1974.[7]
He wrote the foreword to a 1979 posthumous collection of essays by Cornelius Ernst, entitled Multiple Echo.
He was President of the Aristotelian Society 1976/77 and President for the Society for the Study of Theology 1981/82. In 1984 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His
