Confronting the COVID-19 Crisis
The past few months have been a bit of a blur for Yaron Tomer, M.D., but one date in particular stands out: March 24, 2020. “That day, our population health experts informed us that, at current admission rates, our health system would soon be overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases, and we wouldn’t have enough doctors, nurses, ventilators, or protective equipment to properly care for every patient with the disease,” recalls Dr. Tomer, who is the chair of medicine at Einstein and Montefiore and a professor of medicine and of microbiology & immunology and the Anita and Jack Saltz Chair in Diabetes Research at Einstein.

SUMMARY
The authors, science journalists for national newspapers in the UK, originally planned to write what was (in 1987) the little known story of Mileva Maric, the first wife of Einstein, after the first volume of the Collected Papers of Albert Einstein were published by the Princeton University Press. This first academic volume included the love-letters between Albert and Mileva, revealing a missing illegitimate child (Lieserl) and a contentious marriage ending in a bitter divorce. However, as more documentation surfaced, they chose to write an expanded biography of Einstein that described his private life that great efforts had tried to keep suppressed. They were fortunate that Einstein's granddaughter, Evelyn, now felt free to talk to them about the private lives of her ancestors, including her father, Hans Albert (elder son); interviews were also made with one of Einstein's maids (Herta Waldow), amongst many others.
